What good is it to have a lake filled with fish
when you just cannot get a decent bite? Well, to help you to hook
the largest of the lot, here are some pointers for ice fishing
various types of fish.
1) Trout Ice Fishing Tips: If its deep
water lake trout that you are after, your best chances of getting a
bite are to go ice fishing in the daytime, which is when these fish
can see best. And since they can see best, there is more chance of
them being enticed by that tasty bait of yours! Contrary to this,
shallow water lake trout can see best at day break or dawn, which is
when you should go ice fishing for this type.
For deep water trout, make sure that your line
is quite heavy, about 20-30 pound tip up line. Using an airplane jig
works wonders with trout. If you have the opportunity to go ice
fishing at first ice, you are likely to find the best trout about
halfway between the ice and bottom. However, if your ice fishing
trip takes place at the end of the season, the trout will be found
in shallower waters.
2) Northern Pike Ice Fishing Tips: This
can be quite a challenge as Northern Pike are known to be forceful
scavengers. As Northern Pike do not tend to run in schools, they can
be found almost anywhere under the ice. However, just 2-3 feet under
the top ice is where you may want to begin your Northern Pike ice
fishing. Keep one thing in mind, use a very big and a very sharp
hook for these fish as they have razor sharp teeth. Tip ups and
jigging both seem to work with Northern Pike. However, be ready to
fight the big guy if he’s tugging at your line, let him have his
play, and then reel the slugger in.
3) Walleye Ice Fishing Tips: Your best
chance of hooking a walleye is to go ice fishing at first ice. These
fish are not very aggressive so a medium heavy rod should do just
fine. Dawn and dusk are the best times for walleye ice fishing,
whereas a technique that is a cross between forceful jigging and
delicate tapping works best for walleye. Sauger fish are also pretty
much like walleye and you may thus want to use the same technique to
ice fish sauger that you would for walleye.
If you’re in the mod for something relatively
easier, you may want to try crappies ice fishing. Although these
fish do know how to put up a show, it is quite easy to catch
crappies. The one place, where you are likely to be able to try your
hand at ice fishing all these kinds of fish, is at Lake Manitoba
Narrows Lodge.
With these ice fishing tips, and with the
excellent support that you are sure to get from the people at
Manitoba Narrows Lodge (www.narrowslodge.com), you definitely won’t
be telling stories of the ‘one that got away…’ this winter!
